Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters & Bellboys 19 October 2017 – 21 January 2018

Very excited to see an exhibition of Soutine in the UK. This exhibition, held at The Courtauld Gallery from 19 October 2017 to 21 January 2018, brings together an outstanding group of portraits by Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943). Soutine was one of the leading painters in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was seen by many as the heir to Vincent van Gogh. This major exhibition is the first time he has been exhibited in the United Kingdom in 35 years.

Art HardWare online: The Definitive Guide to Artists' Materials. Published in 1987 but worth a look.

There are many new and updated guides to artists materials, I came across on online version of this guide from 1987. I was looking particularly for straight forward information, suitable for painting students. Looking beyond the expected americanisms and outdated links to suppliers, the online version is still relevant for painters today. I particularly liked the quotation used to introduce the section on materials... an ancient artist’s saying, “If you do not know your materials, all you do is express your inability to express yourself.” (Steven Saitzyk © 1987). I tracked down a copy for around £6.00 on amazon, however heres a link to the online version.... http://www.trueart.info
