Painters on show in Paris. Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris

Giuseppe de Nittis http://en.parisinfo.com/show-exhibition/1282676/giuseppe-de-nittis 'Giuseppe de Nittis loved the beautiful people, parties, clothes and great landscapes. This exhibition presents the work of this Italian painter, a friend of Caillebotte, Manet and Degas; characterized by certain elegance in the choice of his themes but also in the technique of his painters. He was also one of the first artists to experiment with pastels on a large scale.' From October 20 2010 to January 16 2011

Painting & related exhibitions in Paris: Heinrich Kühn

'Although photography was a major revolution in the visual arts, it was difficult to give as much legitimacy to photography as to painting at the beginning of the 20th century. Inventing new technical processes, Heinrich Kühn strove throughout his career to give artistic merit to photography. A look back at one of the major figures of international Pictorialism.' http://en.parisinfo.com/show-exhibition/1189637/heinrich-kuehn

A Dynamic Presence: Women Artists at The Jewish Museum, New York, 1947–2010

In conjunction with  Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism , (please see the next post). The Jewish Museum has set out to create a record of all women artists known to have participated in special exhibitions at the museum since it's opening in 1947. The hyper link will take you to the paper which also has links to the work of recorded artists. http://www.thejewishmuseum.org/tjmwomenartistsessay

Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism September 12, January 30, 2011

'Over the past fifty years, feminists have defied an art world dominated by men, deploying direct action and theory while making fundamental changes in their everyday lives.  Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism  explores the widespread influence of feminist practice on the styles and methods of painting from the 1960s to the present. The provocative paintings on view here embody the tension between individual expression and collective politics, between a traditional medium and radical action.'  This is quoted from the website. I will however see if I can get hold of an exhibition catalogue so I can consider in more depth the "provocative paintings".  http://www.thejewishmuseum.org/exhibitions/feministpainting

"Your History is Not Our History" | To repossess the period for themselves, the ’80s art star David Salle and the ’90s-generation painter Richard Phillips have organized “Your History Is Not Our History” at Haunch of Venison Gallery as an argument for the boldness they feel is missing in the market-ready art of today.

DO OR DIE THE HUMAN CONDITION IN PAINTING AND PHOTOGRAPHY Teutloff Photo + Video Collection meets Wallraf

'T he Wallraf will contrast more than 80 works from the wide-ranging and impressive collection of Lutz Teutloff (photographic and video art of the late 20th and early 21st centuries) with around 50 rarely shown masterpieces from its own collection (European painting from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century).' Many thanks to Angad for sending me the information about this exhibition.

Question-what do you add to Dammer Varnish to make it matt?

Answer: Beeswax... not sure how much, but if you look at the bottom of the bottle there is an area of solid wax. So not that much is needed!

Painters at Victoria Miro. Chantal Joffe

With the John Moore's Contemporary painting prize calling for entries I have been thinking that it has only once been won by a female painter. So am posting some female painters that I think are interesting. Please let me know of any that come to mind and I will post them up, thanks.

Blending with a dry brush.

I mentioned using a dry brush for blending oil paint when wet. Here are a couple of images that show the process. I will eventually get around to posting a photo of a range of brushes that are good for this technique.

Latex and vinyl make sense

I t's not a bad idea to wear rubber gloves when you are using oil paint. Cleaning your hands with white spirt and washing up liquid is pretty boring and dries your hands. You can pick up a big box of gloves very cheaply from pound shops, all ways an inspirational excursion for an artist.

Material matters.

Thank-you to every one that attended my talk on Tuesday, and for all the questions. It's interesting that although I stood up and talked for sometime in the lecture theatre It often takes me some time and courage to ask questions. If you do want anything clarified please feel free to ask me, either here in the comments section or by email. All feedback is also useful, it was the first time I had used media clips in a presentation. I hope they added some clarity to the talk, what do you think?  I would be delighted to know.I have attempted to give references to all the artists and information covered but again if you can't find the information you need  in 'Painting matters' let me know. Painting workshop feedback.

I just wanted to thank everyone that attended the workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday. My ambition was for a re-newed excitement for painting. I certainly went away with this. I think it would have been useful to explore supports for painting and various priming methods in more detail. In the meantime The John Jones web site is worth looking at for this information. I have added this information under art suppliers. Please make any suggestions that you may have for how this type of workshop can be improved, I would be very grateful for your feedback.  Please find some of the initial painting experiments made on Tuesday. I look forward to seeing how the work progresses on my next visit in a few weeks time.  Sarah
