Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters & Bellboys 19 October 2017 – 21 January 2018

Very excited to see an exhibition of Soutine in the UK. This exhibition, held at The Courtauld Gallery from 19 October 2017 to 21 January 2018, brings together an outstanding group of portraits by Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943). Soutine was one of the leading painters in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was seen by many as the heir to Vincent van Gogh. This major exhibition is the first time he has been exhibited in the United Kingdom in 35 years.

Art HardWare online: The Definitive Guide to Artists' Materials. Published in 1987 but worth a look.

There are many new and updated guides to artists materials, I came across on online version of this guide from 1987. I was looking particularly for straight forward information, suitable for painting students. Looking beyond the expected americanisms and outdated links to suppliers, the online version is still relevant for painters today. I particularly liked the quotation used to introduce the section on materials... an ancient artist’s saying, “If you do not know your materials, all you do is express your inability to express yourself.” (Steven Saitzyk © 1987). I tracked down a copy for around £6.00 on amazon, however heres a link to the online version.... http://www.trueart.info

This title will be released on April 27, 2017. Teaching Painting: How Can Painting Be Taught in Art Schools?

Im delighted that the paper delivered as part of the Teaching Painting conference held at the whit worth gallery Manchester has been included in the Teaching Painting book. The publication considers the ways in which painting is taught within art schools and academies has, in recent years, undergone several significant changes. As the barriers between media eroded into more fluid borders, art schools have responded by adapting and evolving. Many painting departments have been absorbed into general Fine Art courses but specialist painting courses and pathways still continue to be developed. How have these courses defined and redefined themselves to reflect the current artistic landscape and how can painting maintain an identity within non-specialist approaches? 'Teaching Painting' addresses the historical, theoretical, pedagogical and continually shifting methods of how the medium is taught. It asks how and why approaches to teaching painting have changed and developed and off
