'The Sadler Gift'
100 years ago this September, Sir Michael Sadler came to the University of Leeds as its new Vice Chancellor. Sadler, a visionary educationalist and major collector of British modernist art, stayed at Leeds until 1923. He was pivotal in shaping the artistic world in Leeds during his time there, by his involvement in the Leeds Art Club, the Leeds Art Gallery and in helping found the Leeds Art Collections Fund. Upon leaving in 1923, he left the University a substantial gift of paintings, drawings, prints and textiles. 100 years later, the Sadler Gift still represents the core of the University Art Collection. Certainly, Sadler's collection set the direction for the University Art Collection, with its focus on British modernism.
To mark the centenary of Sadler's arrival in Leeds, the University will run a series of exhibitions throughout the year relating to Sadler and his legacy. Major conservation work is taking place to return the works he gifted to the University of Leeds to their former glory, and the Gift will be displayed together again in a new exhibition at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, running from 6 Sept until 17 December 2011. At the same time, the University of Leeds International Textiles Archive will be exhibiting their collection of Kashmir shawls, many gifted by Sadler from 13 September to 30 March 2012. In the spring, the Gallery will also look at the Sadler textiles, but through the inspired interpretations of contemporary artist Pip Dickens, who has been invited to create new paintings inspired by the textiles for exhibition at the Gallery.
The Gallery exhibition will be accompanied by a full-colour catalogue of the entire Sadler Gift, edited by Dr. Hilary Diaper, former Keeper of the Gallery, which will be available for sale from the Gallery shop. The exhibitions will also be complemented by a diverse programme of related events, including the popular Burton Saturdays, free creative activities suitable for all ages. An academic symposium exploring Sadler's wider legacy for British art and education is planned for February 2012, with speakers invited from across the UK.
