Material matters.

Thank-you to every one that attended my talk on Tuesday, and for all the questions. It's interesting that although I stood up and talked for sometime in the lecture theatre It often takes me some time and courage to ask questions. If you do want anything clarified please feel free to ask me, either here in the comments section or by email. All feedback is also useful, it was the first time I had used media clips in a presentation. I hope they added some clarity to the talk, what do you think?  I would be delighted to know.I have attempted to give references to all the artists and information covered but again if you can't find the information you need  in 'Painting matters' let me know. 1. Hi Sarah, just wanted to say thanks for both the workshops and the talk - it was interesting that your visit seemed to reveal a visible interest in painting among the group. Hopefully this will continue. I've begun collecting various art material supplier's catalogues to try and get an idea of whats avaliale and the pricing.

On the subject of using video clips in the presentation - I think they are a more immmediate an revealing than photos can be. It's always interesting to see the spaces and tools that artists use to create their work. There is a very good video on the Tate website about artist Miroslaw Balka, long but defintely worth a look:

  2. I hope you found the links to art suppliers useful in your quest for materials. Thanks for the link to the video on Miroslaw Balka. I loved it. Highly recommended to every one. I could go on...

If any of you are going on the London Trip you are welcome to visit my studio and have a look at what I'm up to. Will send a map nearer the time.

Why painting still matters : http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/nov/08/why-painting-still-matters-tate-britain

In an era of installations and performance in which 'anything' can be art, this Tate exhibition focuses on the work of five contemporary painters. Please find a link to a Guardian article http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/nov/08/why-painting-still-matters-tate-britain
Luc Tuymans  is not shy about admitting that he is easily one of the most influential figurative painters working today. His work - which often deals with heavy historical subjects like the Holocaust and postcolonial guilt - resists easy interpretation. So fans and the creatively curious alike will be delighted by the  Whitechapel Gallery 's launch of  On & By Luc Tuymans , a collection of Tuyman's writings (one of them is appropriately entitled, "I Still Don't Get It") on not only his own ideas and images, but those of El Greco, Giorgio Morandi, and Neo Rauch, to name a few. Edited by historian-publisher Peter Ruyffelaere, it also includes critical essays, dialogues and interviews by art historians, critics, and artists like Ai Wei Wei and Takashi Murakami. I actually managed to catch  Tuymans  after his recent  Whitechapel Gallery  talk in London with art critic Adrian Searle (who also wrote  On & By Luc Tuymans 's introduction) abou...
